Matthews certainly never graduated from a guitar program or was taught methodically by a real professional beyond an intermediate level. The really good advice moreover only comes from players who are either very good themselves or were taught by world class players. So even if much of the advice he gives is OK, most is pretty basic, which means it can be found elsewhere combined with much better playing. I can't listen to his interpretations at all, since they are sloppy (quite a few badly fretted notes, string noise, etc.) and don't seem thought through or musical. In other words, and most important for me he's not a particularly good player. I have no opinion on his use of science, but I would not be surprised if it's shaky, since he presents himself as quite sure of himself, while through his playing giving the impression that he has read or seen much rather than developed this through years of training and observation of a flawless technique, which makes me doubt his advice, especially when it comes to anything that is more than basic (again I haven't seen anything I would say is wrong per se, but neither his technique nor his musicality are at a level I would strive for). I do find him to be a bit rambly, which is personal taste and doesn't neccessarily discredit him.
